Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is located in the ancient city of Jerusalem. As large as a football field, the church was originally built in the 4th century AD to cover the locations of Christ’s crucifixion (Calvary or Golgotha) and burial (the sepulcher of Joseph of Arimathea). Based on ancient pilgrimage evidence and new evidence under the ceremonial flooring, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is considered a credible historical site.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built over an excavated hill where the traditional Rock of Calvary had been marked by early Christian pilgrims. On the other end of the church is the underground cave that was identified as the family tomb of Joseph where Christ was buried. The huge Church of the Holy Sepulchre is actually three separate churches connected by halls, arches and rotundas. Both the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches share responsibility over the site.
